What is sustainability?

Sustainability is becoming a bit of a buzz word these days. What does it really mean? Well, sustainability has varied meanings for different people and industries. The way I define it is simple:

Balancing people, profit, and planet – or social, economic, and environmental – matters.

Although it's exciting that sustainability is becoming a more common term – I'm gonna be real with you – it's not as great as it sounds. If you are working with a "sustainable" vendor, ask them what they are doing to be sustainable. There is quite a bit of greenwashing out there, so everything may not be as clear as it seems.

How does Thyme & Details operate as a sustainable business?

Here are some practices Thyme & Details follows day-to-day:

  • 100% renewable energy is supplied to home office.

  • We drive an EV, also powered by renewable energy.

  • We are a partner with Eden Reforestation Project. Through this partnership, we make a donation to have 1 tree planted for each guest at the events we plan and coordinate (ex. 250 guest = 250 trees to offset emissions from the event).

  • With a Bachelor's Degree in Sustainable Business (OSU EEDS), Dana serves as a resource for clients and vendors who wish to be more sustainable.

  • We work with local shelters, missions, farms, and composting organizations to divert food waste from our events.

  • We donate leftover florals and decor to nursing homes, churches, artists, and more to extend the life and legacy of our clients' decor.

  • In lieu of gifts, we make a donation on behalf of our clients to a nonprofit organization that means something to them and positively impacts our community.

  • We encourage reduction of waste, reuse of materials in an eco-luxury manner, and recycling/composting of the inevitable waste that does exist.

  • We are developing a network of like-minded, conscious vendors, in addition to a traditional preferred vendor list.
